Our Journey.
Macquarie Technology Group has a long history of being a challenger in the IT industry, with a commitment to differentiated customer service and innovation, continuously reshaping and reimagining.
The industry was dominated by the monopolist Telstra who called customers “subscribers”, tried to crush competition wherever it emerged and delayed the introduction of new technologies that would erode their profits. We were the challenger who fought for deregulation, to bring down prices and launch new innovative technology for our customers. We still are.
1992
Macquarie Telecom was founded. As an Australian entrepreneurial startup we focused on challenging Telstra, a monopolist hindering competition and delaying the introduction of new technologies.
Emphasis is placed on customer service and innovation, serving corporate customers with complex needs but lacking IT skills. Macquarie Telecom advocates for deregulation to lower prices and accelerate innovation. Within 10 years, Macquarie Telecom achieves a revenue of $200 million, showcasing its growth and success.
2000
Macquarie Telecom opens Australia's first Tier 3 data centres, marking a significant milestone in the company's history.
2005
Macquarie Telecom enters the government security sector, introducing competition and innovation in this space.
2011
Macquarie Telecom introduces private cloud compute and cloud storage services in Australia.
2015
Macquarie Telecom launches the first Wide Area Network (WAN) that enables customers to embrace Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) cloud offerings.
2016
Macquarie Telecom Group is launched, encompassing its three significant businesses and go-to market offerings: Macquarie Telecom, Macquarie Cloud Services, and Macquarie Government.
2017
Macquarie Telecom launches SD-WAN bringing better visibility, reliability and performance to customer networks.
2018
Macquarie Data Centres is launched as the fourth business, focusing on providing sovereign data centres for the Australian Federal Government, major hyperscalers, and large multinationals.
2019
Macquarie Cloud Services launches a dedicated Microsoft Azure practice as part of its Hybrid IT offering.
2021
Macquarie Cloud Services launches a dedicated Cyber Security practice for corporate customers.
2023
Macquarie Telecom Group undergoes a name change and becomes Macquarie Technology Group, reflecting its evolution into a digital infrastructure business. The company achieves success in cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, data centres, and telecom.
Why we exist.
We started the hard way with just the savings of our founders, our competitors were quite different from the beginning… Telstra inherited the world and Optus was the lucky child that had parents with virtually unlimited capital. Customers gave us the opportunity, we changed their service experience and we grew from zero to $200m in revenue in 10 years.
We have always been focused on one customer segment, the underserved corporate customer. Our customers have always had significant complexity in their needs, but lack the depth of IT skills. Our customers have always had significant successful businesses, but will always be lost as a rounding number for the Australian telcos and public clouds.

We have built a portfolio of sovereign Australian data centres over the past 2 decades, supporting the mission-critical IT workloads of our Defence, financial services and hyper-scale customers.
Our data centres support 42% of the Australian Government, and 2 out of 3 hyperscalers, with capacity being extended to 63MW.
