SIP Trunking: Consolidating Voice and Data Networks

A SIP trunk is a direct connection between a business and an IP Telephony Service Provider that enables customers to extend VoIP calls to the PSTN beyond their internal private voice network boundary without the need for an on-premise IP-PBX gateway.  It eliminates the need for ISDN PRIs and BRIs connections, and includes multiple voice channels – as many as you want.

SIP Trunking benefits:

  • Eliminate PSTN gateways for IP-PBX: Directly connect a SIP Trunk to an IP-PBX to eliminate gateway management and administration cost, centralize technology management to bring more flexibility in infrastructure design.
  • Eliminate ISDN BRI and PRI subscription charges: Replace costly BRIs, PRIs with SIP Trunking. Don’t need to buy lines in blocks of 10, 20 or 30. Instead, buy the SIP trunk channels you need at better prices
  • Eliminate a redundant network: Use SIP Trunk to consolidate voice and data network into a single, IP based network reducing cost of redundant OA&M.
  • Extend to new services: Apart from having all the features of an ISDN PRI, some SIP Trunking providers also include business continuity features to enable auto-diversion of calls to other offices or employees’ mobile numbers to protect against site equipment or access link failure.
  • Hardware interface cost saving: Using Ethernet as the interface, a SIP Trunk can provide high scalability of channels from 5 to hundreds without the need for addition PBX interface. This provide significant saving on PRI hardware interface cost as each PRI can only accommodate a maximum of 30 channels.
  • Infrastructure consolidation saving: SIP Trunk can be used to facilitate voice infrastructure consolidation. Branch office PBX / key systems and local telephone line rentals can be eliminated by centralising voice switching to an IP PBX in the data centre or head office with a single SIP trunk that can host local number ranges of branch offices from different states. Less voice channel will be required due to increased utilization resulting from pooling the voice channels together into a single SIP Trunk group.
