Get more out of your bandwidth

A recent customer survey found that less than 15 per cent of enterprise bandwidth usage was business critical.

More alarmingly, up to 53 per cent of bandwidth was used for non-business related purposes, such as downloading MP3 files or surfing the web.

The result of this unsanctioned Internet usage is a slower response time for business critical applications – a major business issue facing around 64 per cent of enterprises.

Unmanaged network traffic can have other serious implications:

  • Bandwidth costs – Bandwidth is a valuable resource. If it is being wasted on non-business related activities then less is available to generate revenue or add value to the business
  • Productivity – Employee and overall business activity suffer when access to business critical applications is slow. On average, poor network performance costs organisations $100 per hour per affected employee
  • Security – When employees download ‘free' software such as P2P files or media players, they often come with a hidden cost: spyware, worms, viruses and denial of service attacks rank as a top source of network congestion according to a recent Network World Survey

Increasingly, business and government rely on applications and information carried across the Wide Area Network (WAN) and Internet, to power their business.

The ability to see exactly which applications are consuming valuable bandwidth and therefore make informed decisions about controlling that traffic is critical to optimal network use.

Take control of your network costs

Bandwidth Manager Services allow you to make the most of your Internet and WAN resources.

You can:

  • Gain visibility – Find out exactly what applications are being used across your network and what portion of bandwidth they consume
  • Maximise bandwidth – Stretch your existing capacity and use extra bandwidth to support business critical applications
  • Restrict non-business critical applications – Improve employee productivity and organisation efficiency by limiting recreational traffic such as KaZaA and AudioGalaxy
  • Enhance security – Protect your organisation from the impact of viruses, worms and denial service types of attacks with a second line of defence to perimeter security
  • Deploy new applications – Reserve or cap bandwidth to ensure a steady stream is available for new applications

Macquarie Telecom Bandwidth Manager is a managed data service that lets you take control of your WAN and Internet resources.

It gives you a better understanding of how much bandwidth is being used by specific applications, as well as what servers, office locations and users they are associated with.

It is all about helping you get more value from your existing investments.
