A 3G data service is a key component in the mobilisation of
every organisation. It enables high speed (up to 384kbps) mobile data connections for
Laptop users, via Macquarie Telecom’s 3G network. This allows access to a range of
business applications, to files and to the internet, at all times. Emails, on-line
information and critical files are available when they are needed. Why 3G?
More and more organisations are looking to get increased performance out of their
workforce. 3G data services help them to do so by providing a solution designed to drive
productivity and improve customer service. At the same time, increased flexibility allows
employees to improve work-life balance. The 3G data card simply plugs into the Laptop PCMCIA Port. The Macquarie Telecom 3G
solution is powered by the Vodafone 3G network in Australia and when outside of 3G
coverage, the service roams back to the Vodafone GPRS network (approx 50kbps). Outside of
Australia, the service roams on Vodafone partner networks. With the evolution of the current UMTS 3G network to High-Speed Downlink Packet Access
or HSDPA (sometimes referred to as 3.5G), bandwidth available through mobile devices is
set to increase dramatically over the next 12 months, with speeds of 1.2Mbps planned this
calendar year. Ongoing network evolution is expected to lead to the delivery of up to 7.6Mbps
in the foreseeable future. What is 3G?
3G is the next generation of mobile network technology. It means you can access your
email, the internet and your office networks at broadband speeds. When you're out of the
office, you can work just as efficiently as you do at your desk, accessing the information
you need from your mobile phone, PDA or laptop.
What is HSDPA?
HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), also known as 3.5G, 3G+, or 3G Broadband, is
a natural evolution of the current 3G network and currently offers higher data rates which
peak at 1.8Mbps. Typical speeds experienced range from 400kbps to 1.2Mbps. Similar to
existing network technologies, devices will seamlessly handover to 3G or 2G (GPRS) where
there is no 3G+ coverage.
Does Macquarie Telecom offer 3G data services? Have they been upgraded with HSDPA?
Yes. Macquarie Telecom launched its 3G data network in August 2006, and was one of the
first in Australia to offer these services with the high performance of HSDPA. Macquarie
Telecom 3G users now experience high-speed access to their business network, email or the
Internet.
