Better Management Speeds Network Response Times by up to 35% - and cut costs

Sydney, Australia, 16th June 2005 - Macquarie Telecom today launched a new service that can help businesses and government speed response times across their Wide Area Networks (WAN) and Internet links by as much as 35 per cent – without upgrading infrastructure.Macquarie Telecom Bandwidth Manager is a managed data network service that gives IT executives greater control of which traffic uses what bandwidth across each network.

“Research shows that more than 60 per cent of Australian enterprises have non-business related traffic chewing up as much as 50 per cent of their bandwidth. The impact of poor bandwidth management on IT costs, employee productivity and security can be massive,” said Glen Noble, General Manager Data and Hosting, Macquarie Telecom.

“Despite IT departments' endeavours to manage and police applications on their network, many IT managers are shocked at the unapproved applications and the amount of network resources they assume,”

“Slow application response times cost around $100 per hour per employee in lost productivity. If you can boost your response times by 35 per cent by simply controlling staff downloading MP3 files and recreational Web surfing, the ROI on your WAN and Internet links is significantly higher than buying more bandwidth,” he said.

Macquarie Telecom Bandwidth Manager identifies what applications traverse the network, what portion of bandwidth they consume, how they are performing and where delays originate (including what servers, office locations, and users are associated with the traffic).

It enables policy-based management so traffic critical to the business can be prioritised over non-essential applications. And because conditions on a network continually change, Macquarie Telecom Bandwidth Manager service monitors network performance on an ongoing basis and sets and modifies policies as needed.

Bandwidth Manager helps organisations cut costs by enabling IT executives to:

  • Gain visibility – Find out exactly what applications are being used across the network and what portion of bandwidth they consume to make informed decisions based on business priorities
  • Maximise bandwidth – Use policy-based bandwidth allocation to stretch existing capacity to support business critical applications eg prioritise ERP and database application traffic above non-critical traffic
  • Restrict non-business critical applications – Improve employee productivity and organisation efficiency by limiting recreational traffic such as KaZaA and AudioGalaxy
  • Boost security – Limit the impact of spyware, viruses, worms and denial service types of attacks that typically come with recreational network downloads eg MP3s by adding a second line of defence to perimeter security
  • Deploy new applicationss – Reserve or cap bandwidth for non-critical applications to ensure a steady stream is available for new applications

“By gaining greater visibility inside the WAN, IT executives can make more informed decisions – Bandwidth Manager is all about getting more out of your existing infrastructure,” Noble said.

The Macquarie Telecom Bandwidth Manager service comprises a mix of technology and trained experts to assist in analysing data and developing policies to maximise ROI.

The service is carrier independent – users do not have to be an existing Macquarie Telecom customer and access type does not impact the service.  For existing customers, the service runs on the company's Internet access, Private IP network, Frame Relay, Hosted Internet and Business VPN offerings.

By implementing Macquarie Telecom Bandwidth Manager a typical organisation with five sites linked to a corporate office could realise savings of up to 40 per cent on its IT infrastructure budget by optimising existing WAN infrastructure.

Bandwidth Manager joins a range of Macquarie Telecom managed services and management tools that put visibility, control and management back in the hands of customers including:

  • InView – online data management tool
  • Volume Control – telecommunications call management (fixed and mobile)
  • Volume Control Online Alerts Service – real time notifications if telecommunications traffic policies are breached
  • FleetView – a tool for the management of mobile fleets including employee usage rights on mobile phones and detailed cost analysis.
  • Audit Services – telecommunications audit, services and equipment reviews
