Macquarie Telecom calls for Government to increase pace of telco competition in regional Queensland

Sydney, AUSTRALIA – 18th April 2005 – Completing a tour of regional Queensland today, Macquarie Telecom called for the Federal Government to keep regulatory reform high on its agenda in order to increase the pace of competition in regional areas.

The call comes as Macquarie Telecom boosts its presence in regional Queensland through a strategic partnership with the state's peak business body, Commerce Queensland.

“Regional Queensland is the backbone of Australia's export industry. In today's global market success hinges on access to affordable telecommunications and IT services. If we want to maintain our competitiveness it is essential that regional areas have access to the latest services at competitive prices,” said Maha Krishnapillai, Director Strategy, Regulatory and Government, Macquarie Telecom.

“This can only happen if the pace of competition is increased.”

“Competition means greater choice, innovative products, lower prices and increased investment in local infrastructure for regional areas,” said Krishnapillai.

“But we won't get investment in regional communications unless we have an effective reform process,” he added.

Regional businesses to benefit from strategic partnership As Commerce Queensland's preferred supplier of telecommunications services, Macquarie Telecom will deliver its members – who include businesses of all sizes across the State – an average saving of around 30 per cent on their current telecommunications costs.

Members will also be able to access Macquarie Telecom's online management tools such as FleetView and Volume Control that can track call volume and trends – this will help them realise savings in both call and administration costs.

“The Commerce Queensland relationship helps Macquarie Telecom reach regional businesses and increase the pace of competition in these areas. It lets us fill a gap in the market that other carriers haven't met,” he added.
