Tourism Council of Tasmania first to save with new telco pricing

Hobart. November 22, 2004 - Macquarie Telecom has introduced the first single call zone for business and government calling anywhere within Tasmania.

According to Macquarie Telecom Chief Executive, David Tudehope, a single call zone across Tasmania will result in a significant reduction in an organisation's communications spend and simplify administration.

“Macquarie Telecom has a proven track record in being first to provide better rates for business and government and we are pleased to lead the way in offering this new pricing plan to our Tasmanian customers,” he said.

There are currently three call zones within the island state resulting in a raft of STD charges for business and government. For example, calls from Hobart to Launceston, are charged at STD rates by all other carriers.

Among the first to enjoy the new savings is the Tourism Council of Tasmania.

”This move by Macquarie Telecom will put much needed dollars back into company coffers for expenditure on tourism generating opportunities,” said Chief Executive Officer Daniel Leesong. “Tourism is Tasmania's fastest growing industry and its success is a driving force through the rest of the economy.

“The number of visitors is up by 11 percent on the previous year and the amount they are spending in the Tasmanian economy is up by 15 percent. By making it easier and more cost-effective to communicate across the state, Macquarie Telecom can help fuel this growth,” he said.

Macquarie Telecom has been a champion of local call deregulation in Australia. In 1997 it led the charge by commissioning an independent study that showed the cost to Telstra of supplying local calls was well below the 20-25c it charged service providers and end users alike. Macquarie Telecom then fought for four years to achieve government deregulation which has resulted in around a 40 percent drop in local call charges across the country.
