Forty percent saving expected on annual bill

October 28, 2004 - Townsville City Council is set to shave more than 40 percent per annum from its communications spend with the appointment of Macquarie Corporate Telecommunications as its telecommunications provider for the next two years.

According to acting Mayor Ann Bunnell, Macquarie Corporate won the tender which covers the supply of voice, data and mobile solutions based on its superior management tools, local content and competitive pricing strategy. Other bidders on the short list of four included Townsville Regional Telco and Telstra Countrywide.

“Based on our telecommunications expenditure of $688,000 in 2003-04, the Macquarie Corporate contract is expected to result in savings of around 40 percent or $278,000 in the first year,” she said.

“We are pleased to be working with Macquarie and being able to allocate the expected savings to essential council projects designed to benefit the community.”

Besides the competitive pricing offered by Macquarie, a portion of the savings is expected to result from the Council's implementation of Macquarie's management tools which will enable the Council to improve real-time control of its telecommunications usage.

Macquarie Corporate Queensland State Manager, Gaven Nicholls, said “Our real-time management tools, such as FleetView, a web-based reporting and mobile fleet management tool and VolumeControl which monitors and controls voice cost and usage, will play a key role in assisting the Council to manage its telecommunications usage and costs.

“Being awarded the Council contract is very pleasing,” he said. “Over the past five years Macquarie has delivered a competitive telecommunications environment to North Queensland from voice services to extending our national data network to Townsville and other regional centres. Opened in 1999, our regional office in Townsville is specifically dedicated to Central, Western and North Queensland regions.”

Macquarie looks forward to working with the Townsville City Council to assist in creating positive outcomes for North Queensland in key strategic areas such as job creation, regional economic development and the fostering of technological innovation.
