When coming to choose a VPN provider, VPN Security and Secure IP Networking is one of the critical factors you have to consider.

At Macquarie Telecom, we pride ourselves to be the expert in IP VPN security and our data centre (Intellicentre) is DSD and ISO27001 certified. We are the first telecommunication provider in Australia to achieve this highest-level of security certification. Our internet service has inbuilt security features such as Anti-virus, Anti-Spam and web content filtering. Our MPLS based Private IP VPN service has adopted the best practices on how to secure a MPLS VPN.

Most people know that if they are running their IP VPN over the internet, it is an insecure environment. That is why devices such as firewall and encryption have been used to secure their network. However most people assume that if their network is based on an MPLS private IP VPN platform, there is few or no further security measures required. This is a false perception.

Whilst MPLS can provide inherent logical separation of VPN traffic from another, with equivalent security to those from an ATM or Frame Relay network, it can only be as secure as it should be if security measures have been embraced in the network design, implementation and operation. In other words, your service provider must ensure a secure VPN MPLS operation.

Security Practices used in Macquarie Telecom’s MPLS Private IP VPN

Network Design

  • Dedicated PE router used for routing of internet traffic - separation of public vs private VPN traffic routing to avoid hacking attack
  • MD5 authentication employed on CE-PE link – prevention of unauthorised access to the MPLS network
  • Core network routing protocol secured through neighbour MD5 authentication and maximum routes to prevent attacks such as label packets injection.
  • MPLS security mechanism enables secure logical separation of VPN Traffic.

Network Implementation

  • MPLS core routers and switches are housed in secure data centres / premises
  • Stringent procedures in place to check and approve every network design by multiple parties before implementation to eliminate human errors.
  • Adopted best practice control procedures for network change / upgrade

Network Operation

  • 24/7 hours network monitoring and supervision through our secure network operation centre (NOC)
  • Backup NOC for additional security
  • Secure configuration of all routers (CE, PE, P, MPLS Core routers).

We employ best practices security measures in our Private IP MPLS VPN service to give you peace of mind. It is a secure IP network platform you can confidently rely on for all your mission critical data and business applications.
