United Way is a charitable trust
that raises funds at the workplace and in the community. United Way has thousands of offices
around the world, sometimes known locally as Community Chest or Community Fund. The offices
are run independently of each other but they are strongly linked by their common purpose:
to bring the community together to promote individual well-being and social good. United Way
is non political, non religious and volunteer based. Each United Way is comprised of a group
of volunteers, who are responsive to community needs, collect donations efficiently, review
charitable projects which need support and distribute those funds to projects which meet the
funding guidelines.
With the support of corporate sponsors, such as Macquarie Telecom, United Way is able to
distribute 90 cents out of every donation dollar to the causes it supports.
United Way raises and distributes in excess of US$3 billion per year to charities worldwide.
Macquarie Telecom has been supporting United Way now for more than ten years and many of
our staff make donations through a payroll deduction scheme, and Macquarie Telecom donating
directly in its own right.
"We are delighted to be associated with United Way and applaud their efforts and commitment
to those less well off in our community……. In an industry that is constantly evolving in its
challenges and opportunities, perhaps it is all too easy to miss the greatest challenge that
exists in our community. United Way is an excellent vehicle for our people to help redress
directly, on an ongoing basis, those most in need."
